rdmsm4x — Fleet Xcode rollout prepared, reboot handoff, auto-resume armed

Host: rdmsm4x · Window: 2026-08-31 20:40–20:52 EDT · Ticket: TASK-20260831-19 Summary: Confirmed Xcode 27.0 Beta 6 is out, surveyed all six fleet Macs, established the per-architecture ceiling, and left the rollout fully staged behind one interactive Apple ID step. rdmsm4x is prepared for its reboot to macOS 27 Beta 8 with auto-resume armed and verified.

Findings

• Xcode 27.0 Beta 6 (27A5252f) is available; the fleet runs Beta 5 (27A5237k).
• Xcode 27 is Apple Silicon only. xcodes list --architecture x86_64 tops out at 16.4 (16F6); --architecture universal tops out at 26.6 (17F113). The two Intel hosts (rdmpw3265m, rdmpw3275m) can therefore never take 27 — their ceiling is 26.6, and they sit one build below it at 17F112.
• No Command Line Tools update is available anywhere. softwareupdate --list offers none on any reachable host; arm64 hosts are on 27.0.0.0.1787197235, Intel on 26.6.0.0.1781586589. The only pending update on the whole fleet is macOS 27 Beta 8 on rdmsm4x.
• rdmsm4x is the only host not yet on 26A5425a (beta 8). The other three arm64 hosts already run it.
• jdmbair13m5 has no Xcode 27 beta at all — only 26.6. Consequence: brew install there fails outright with "Please update to Xcode 27.0 (or delete it)", because its Xcode is older than its macOS. Homebrew is degraded on that host until Xcode 27 lands.

Changes made

• Opened TASK-20260831-19 (parent) plus five per-host children TASK-20260831-25..29, each handed off to claude@<host> with its own target and the live tailnet address.
• Wrote ~/dev/fleet/xcode-fleet-20260831/SESSION-STATE.md answering the six continuity questions.
• Armed auto-resume: ~/dev/fleet/ops/resume/PINNED-SESSION-xcodefleet + ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.eastcoastscience.claude-resume-xcodefleet.plist, following the existing resume_pinned_on_login.zsh pattern. Verified: the agent resolved the transcript (912K) and dispatched into a Terminal tab, exit 0, at 20:42:46.
• Dispatched brew install xcodesorg/made/xcodes to the three hosts lacking it. Outcome at write time: rdmpw3265m still running (holds a Homebrew lock), rdmbair13m5 not yet installed, jdmbair13m5 blocked by the Xcode-version gate above.

Traps recorded (both now in SESSION-STATE.md)

1. ssh <shorthost> timing out is not evidence a host is down. rdmbair15m5 and jdmbair13m5 were reported unreachable and were active the entire time; the failure was LAN name resolution.
2. Every fleet host has a stale duplicate tailnet node under its bare name; the live node is the -1 suffix. Matching on the bare name selects the offline corpse and yields a timeout that reads exactly like a down machine. 3. ticket handoff is singular — it reassigns rather than fanning out. Handing one ticket to five hosts moved ownership five times; per-host work needs child tickets.
4. ticket list has no --limit flag; it errors rather than ignoring it.

Corrections made in-session

• Duplicate children TASK-20260831-20..24 were created alongside 25..29; 20..24 resolved as duplicates, keeping the set carrying the fuller descriptions.
• The parent ticket was briefly handed to claude@rdmbair13m5 by my error and reclaimed to claude@rdmsm4x with --force and a note; rdmbair13m5 never worked it.

Blocked on — owner only

xcodes has no stored Apple ID and offers no signin subcommand; beta downloads authenticate inline with 2FA. Rich runs, on rdmsm4x:

Once the .xip files exist, distribution and xcodes install --path need no auth on any other host. Note ~/Downloads already holds Xcode_27_beta_4.xip and Xcode_27_beta_5.xip (1.8 GB each), so beta downloads on this fleet have historically come from the developer portal directly — either source produces a usable .xip.

Undo

Auto-resume only: launchctl bootout gui/$(id -u)/com.eastcoastscience.claude-resume-xcodefleet and remove the plist plus PINNED-SESSION-xcodefleet. Nothing else on any host was modified.
